Everyone is tied up with some or the other responsibility. getting a job, earning money, health issues, children education, housing etc. All these are so much filled up in the mind that coming out of it is very difficult. Our Sages had recognized this weakness of human mind. Then how to orient such a mind towards the path of Self Realisation. Unless there is self realization, unless there is unification with Paramatma, there can not be dissolution of griefs and sufferings. Shruti says, ‘Tarati shok Atmavit’ (One who knows Atma, experiences Atma, he only goes beyond the human woes).
Then how the human race would get relief from their sufferings? Particularly few years of the old age prior to death are very painful. To make the people understand Ved principles through stories and tales, Puranas were created. Sages recognized that the man must be separated from the worldly life, which is the basic reason for his troubles and sufferings. How to keep them away from worldly life. Their gross buddhi is not able to comprehend Subtle Vedant Principles. Then umpteen number of ways like, worship, Penance, Temple visits, pilgrimage, were told in Shastras so that the people will take out their mind deeply immersed in worldly things, at least for some moments.
