Pranam to Parampoojya Parameshwar Sadguru Swami Anilji Maharaj
Atmadhnyan Shighra Sadhana… 21
(English Translation of the series in Hindi by Brahmatmaikdhnyani Sant Swami Anilji Maharaj)
We have gone through Atma – anatma vivek. A bit of it is getting understood. However the subject was tension. You were siting the advantages of Atmadhnyan in scientific age. You were telling, tension gets evaporated with Atmadhnyan. Perhaps you have forgotten that you were to tell, how to get rid of tension.
No, no. It is not forgotten. I am going to tell the same thing. However for understanding the process, the knowledge of Anvaya – Vyatirek is essential, that is why first the related study was undertaken. When the word tension is said, it includes two elements. One is outer situation and the other is the analytical mind or intellect grasping it.
The principle of Anvaya – Vyatirek is applicable here also. We will understand this from the Dwaitvivek chapter of Panchadashi Granth.
It is more appropriate to explain the gist of the contents rather than merely translating.
Whether the mind is tensed due to outside situations?
When we take a look at cause effect relationship, we realise that mind is only responsible for getting tension or cheerfulness. We learned that when cause is not there effect can not be there.
This Principle confirms that when mind is not at work (no thinking) there is neither tension nor cheerfulness. The analytical mind that is the intellectual capability only binds jeev (intellectual illusion of I, me, mine) in sorrow and happiness. When it works (exists) man experience happiness, sadness, when it disappears neither happiness nor sorrow is felt.
Like this Principle of Anvaya Vyatirek is also seen in worldly activities.
Antahkaran means
- Mind
- Intellect
- Chitta
- Ego
In awakening and dreaming state antahkaran is filled with subject. That means whatever subject is in antahkaran same is sensed by senses and creates the situation of tension or cheerfulness.
When man is sleeping then there is no antahkaran means antahkaran is not at work. So antahkaran can not take the subjects. That is why during sleeping state man is not in tension. When yogi medidates in the state of samadhi antahkaran is not at work, so there is neither happiness nor sorrow.
During sleep or in the state of samadhi antahkaran is said to be sadroop means dissolved in Atma. The principle of Vedant that man gets bound by his own mind alone has to be accepted here.
Panchadashikar (Parampoojya Vidyaranya Swami) states that dream, memory, day dreaming, desires (manorath) do not carry any material. There is no favorable or unfavorable situation in reality. Then also Seeing tiger or enemy makes the mind uneasy or sighting dear ones, happy incident brings cheerfulness.
When the matter is present, the situation is also real whether good or bad then also in state of deep sleep, samadhi, unconsciousness, there is no tension even if tiger or enemies come near or no cheerfulness with dear ones nearby.
If any wicked person tells a man that his son is expired in an accident, then the man believing that as truth becomes tense without verifying. And if in reality some such bad thing has happened but the person doesn’t become sad till he hears about it.
This clearly shows that outer situation does not make a person neither tense nor cheerful.
Now It is quite clear and proven that the tension or cheerfulness is the result of man’s intellectual material. When man connects his antahkaran (explained earlier) with the outer situation then only he gets tensed.
If he resolves that whatever happening is the mere interaction of the Gunas of the Nature (explained earlier), so I should ignore the situation and endure the same; then tension can not reach him.
That is why attaining Atmadhnyan is essential to lead a tension free life.
Shruti also tells
“Tarati shokamatvit”
Atmadhnyan only destroys grief, anguish, tension, sorrow. One who is Knower, attained Atmadhnyan wades through any kind of grief and anguish.
Whoever understands through ‘Atma – anatma vivek’ that this visible Nature being sensed by senses is a fallacy, delusion, false like a dream and is momentary, he doesn’t get tensed. Such a person looks at his own life like a seer similar to somebody watching a movie but doesn’t get involved (into it).
Other advantages of Atmadhnyan we will see in next Chapter
