Society in general is under the grip of nescience, makes the common people pray at the Samadhi, of dead Mahatmas. They take those dead Mahatmas as their Guru. It has become a normal practice at many such places, that the people working at the dead Mahatma’s Samadhi or priest working there, initiate the people by giving Mantra. The devotees keep on reciting Mantra thinking dead Mahatma as their Guru.
There are seven types of Gurus described in the Granth Gurugita. Sadguru, Paramguru described in there, give discourses on Vedant. These Atmadhnyani Gurus very earnestly think that, the people engrossed in worldly matters are continuously going through so many miseries, and sufferings; they should come out of it.
Hardly any Gurus are there now a days as mentioned in Gurugita, who can preach Vedant Principles. If at all some one is there who wishes to impart the knowledge about Upanishad, Shruti; people tend to ignore him. They do not like to go through Vedant Principles which they need to understand by continuous thinking. When they are told to do mediation, pranayam, they get satisfaction of doing something. That is why action oriented devotional activities are liked immensely by the people. But where thinking is involved, intellectual contemplation is involved, people generally back out. One can only reach out to Paramatma through thinking, thinking and thinking. No action oriented things, rituals, Penance can take you to God. Paramatma is Absolute Dhnyan and one Can reach out only through Dhnyan with blessings from Sadguru.
